I was minding my own buisiness and reading a comment on a torrent site when there was a post commenting on the ratio of (early) dvd releases of certain films.

Seems some complain about the ratio being 1:85:1 (16:9) instead of the original cinematic 2:35:1 ratio format. Thinking the 1:85:1 format is a fair and established format I start to look into the widescreen format. I mean what is the point of broadcasting or releasing in the 2:35:1 format when widescreen tv (16:9) as we know it today does away with the annoying black bars at the top and bottom of the screen in broadcasting and standard dvd releases?.

Seems JVC is developing true widescreen format tv's of 2:35:1 format http://crave.cnet.co.uk/televisions/0,39029474,49287301,00.htm

Is there any point in obsoluting the current widescreen format or is there even a point to a new ultra widescreen tv format?.

What are your thoughts?.

I myself personally like the idea on a film front alone of cause. But fail to see much point in the near future for tv as it will have the same annoyance of a left and right black bar in the same way as the 4:3 format did for 16:9 widescreen broadcasts for the top and bottom black bars!.

Simply a case of the TV companies needing something new to keep sales going mate ! It would present the films in true cinema style though, although to be honest, I can't see that you'd notice any real benefit unless the screen is ridiculously large ........

just out of interest , why when i watch some dvd's on my widescreen tv do i still get the black bars top and bottom when it's supposed to be a widescreen tv. i thought the tv was supposed to do away with these. i have got the tv set to 16:9 and the dvd player set to 16:9.

i can live with it but just thought i'd ask.

cheers , ste.

Molly, simply put near all films are shot in a much wider screen format than widescreen tv's!. I know, it is kind of a crazy situation but I think the 16:9 wide-screen format was more developed for TV broadcasts than films. And that films broadcast on tv are broadcast in the 16:9 format as are near all tv broadcasts these days (except those that were never made in widescreen in the first place but 4:3 in which case nothing can be done with them).

Films released on dvd however, do tend to be kept to there original true format which is always a lot wider than widescreen tv's.

And then there is the new Hi-Def format being developed in Japan that will take the pi$$ out of even the newer 1080p in not to many years time, but thats a different matter alltogether!.
