Microsoft's downloadable film rentals for the Xbox 360 console will cost from £2 per movie in the UK.

The Xbox Live Marketplace Video Store launches in Europe on December 11.

Some 40 films will initially be available to rent as downloads from the online service.

They will cost £2 for standard film formats or £3.20 for high definition films.

The films stay on the console's hard drive for 14 days after being downloaded via broadband from the Marketplace website.

They must be watched within 24 hours after the user first presses play.

Robin Truchy, director of Xbox Live for Europe, said the launch would increase the range of entertainment options for Xbox 360 fans.

"We want to give them the entertainment they want, in the format they want, when they want it and at an affordable price," he said.

Gamers can also choose to rent the films using Microsoft Points, instead of money, which they accrue while playing games over Xbox Live.

I been wandering about this quite a bit when there was mention of hd films being available for download.

If it's true hd format then how long would it take to download the film in what would probably be in excess of 20gb?. Or however big they are on the HD DVD discs?.
