Can a fax machine run on an ADSL line?

If I try to connect a fax machine to my phone line the Broadband link drops. as soon as I unplug the fax the broadband link is OK again.

Does anyone run a fax and broadband on the same line?

I've got customers using fax machines on ADSL lines. have you tried a different filter? also trying a different fax machine would be good if possible. It might be down to the total REN of the devices plugged in to the line - have you tried with just the fax machine plugged in?

i have only got 1 phone on the line so the rem must be low enough. The fax worked fine before I had broadband on the line.
good point about the filter. I will try another one. I have only got 1 fax so I can't substitute another machine.

Looking around on the net seems to suggest it can't be done but I can't understand why. I will keep looking
