It varies but should be shown or stated in your house deeds. If your property is listed in the Land Registry (www.landregisteronline.gov.uk (http://www.landregisteronline.gov.uk)), there should be reference to who is responsible for which boundary.

The last couple of years both of my neighbours have replaced hedge with wooden fence...and of course they have put the crappy side towards me...
Last year i enquired about the back garden fence to a friend who works for a soliciter, apparantly whenever i want i could demand that the fence on the left should be facing me, im just waiting for a argument:biggrin

Whoever has the posts showing is the recipient of a neighbours goodwill.:biggrin
Ie posts showing your side = neighbours fence/ responsibility.:ok

Just spoke to better half who works for land reg. She says that it may or not be stated in the registry, normally it is but not always. Not much help I'm afraid

i remember that when we were buying our old house the title deed clearly spelled out which fence was our responsibility in this case it was the right hand side of the property...left side if you looked at it from the road..i remember the conveyancing solicitor telling us, although not written in stone, the general rule is that, unless otherwise stated, this is usually the case:ok
check to see which side,if any, your problem neighbour might have maintained..usually good sign as to which side he thinks is his responsibilty

thanks jake:ok
the fence in question is on the left looking at the house from the front.
we have concrete posts down the centre of the 2 properties, the problem is
the wooden fence was erected on our side about 6" in.
the enemy next door have now put plastic trellis up and are growing a couple of climbers,
so i've decided i'm pulling the fence down and if they want 1, put it up on their own side.
this may sound petty but they hate us for having a conservatory built and caused us alot
of money and time to get planning permission.
also about 3 years ago i was going to put a new fence up in between the concrete posts
but was told i couldn't as they said there house was bigger than mine and the fence was in the right place.....after a few heated discussions i finally gave up and left it, much to the disgust of mrs pp.
i hate the fookers now though, so there's no prisoners:biggrin
