Both formats are different. HD-DVD is the m*crosoft backed version. Blu-ray is the Pony backed version. HD-DVD can hold upto 30GB of data, Blu-ray 50GB there have been reports of 100GB blu-ray discs along with a 200GB. Both formats are different, for example if you had a xbox 360 with the HD-DVD add-on drive it will not play blu-ray. The same goes if you had a ps3 (which has blu-ray as standard) it will not play HD-DVD. At the moment i've seen a larger selection of films on Blu-ray than HD-DVD. I did read somewhere that 7 of the 8 major film studios have signed up to Blu-ray, where only 1 studio has signed upto HD-DVD, mind you i have since seen Superman Returns on both formats, so who knows. As for an upscaling dvd player playing either format no they dont. Within a year maybe 2 there will be hybird systems that play both formats. This personally i think m*crosoft are waiting for hence why they released the 360 elite without an inbuilt HD-DVD player. Pony have stated the the ps3 is to have a 10 year shelf life, therefore saying that no matter what Blu-ray is here to stay.

Hi m8 I have the xbox HD DVD player which is great but my local Blockbusters only rent out blue ray films & the manager said they have no intention of renting HD DVD to his knowledge it has been a very slow start up in my opinion for available hd dvd films but is slowly gathering momentum I visited a HMV store recently & they had a section selling both hd & blue ray films.

i have noticed that my local branch of choices is doing blu-ray too, was suits me having a ps3, dont no if they are doing hd-dvd. maybe it has something to do with the fact u have to buy an add-on drive for the xbox and not many ppl have / or know this. where as the ps3 blu-ray is the heart and soul of the machine, therefore there is a big rental market, i dont no.

most will be producing a blu/hd player ( as in +/- dvd format) so it shouldnt matter who wins in the end, LG have one already buts it about £1000 (looks like it might be some time before they are £9.99 in asda'a LOL)

found this little report on the msn uk site this morning after the CES show at the weekend.

"Sony was banging the creativity drum this weekend, with a series of announcements encompassing new and not-so-new products. With the PlayStation 3 now firmly established and the HD format war almost won, Sony could gush about something else for a change."

have m*crosoft started to fly the white flag in the hd format war.

Hi lads, have a look at this and see if your pc is up to it?

It's the cheapest way of staying "neutral" and getting a Blu-Ray writer as well !!!

I've just bought one and it's landed on my lap today, retail kit with a 25GB BD-RE disc included, can't be bad:biggrin

I think Blue-ray will win the format war because warner have now decided that it is not going to support hd-dvd but will now support blue-ray leaving

Paramount and Universal supporting hd-dvd

against 20th Century Fox, Sony, Disney.

also paramount have changed their stance on blue-ray saying they may start releasing new movies on the format from summer 08, whilst supporting hd-dvd.
