Gary,
U can use a password tool to either find out the password or reset it!
There's software called 'Hiren's Boot CD' it contain's load's of tool's for all manner of thing's including 'Password retrieval/reset!'
Here's a place you can read what it contain's and download it...

Once you download it, burn the image to a cd and that's it!

You can use it in dos or os!

Good Luck!

(I've fixed 2 laptop's with password problem's using it already!)

sounds more like a bios password to me, hiren's wont help you with that, looks like you willl need to reset the cmos chip, normally the battery for it is under the keyboard, BUT could be anywhere!!!

a quick google might help you for location

@ Kejot

I don't know what software you got mate but it can't be 'Hiren's Boot CD!'
As it deffo has BIOS & CMOS Tool's... if you looked at the link I provided to download it, it gives detail's of all the tool's it contain's...
This is what it say's about the BIOS & CMOS Tool's it contain's;

BIOS / CMOS Tools:
- CMOS 0.93 - CMOS Save / Restore Tool
- BIOS Cracker 4.8 - BIOS password remover (cmospwd)
- BIOS Cracker 1.4 - BIOS password remover (cmospwc)
- BIOS Utility 1.35.0 - BIOS Informations, password, beep codes and more.
- !BIOS 3.20 - a powerfull utility for bios and cmos
- DISKMAN4 - a powerful all in one utility
- UniFlash 1.40 - bios flash utility
- Kill CMOS - a tiny utility to wipe cmos

The very reason I first got hiren's is for this purpose & as I said before I have retreived password's from 2 laptop's with it since!
(I have found '!BIOS & BIOS Cracker' to be the best so far!)

With regard's to removing the BIOS/CMOS battery... this should be a last resort because;
(1.) You have to remove alot of parts which is time cosuming & you could possibly break something in the process! (Also 'Warrantee issue's if applicable!')
(2.) Also, alot of laptop's today have a chip that cannot be re-set by the removal of it's cmos battery / or 'shorting' it's jumper's! No matter how long you leave the battery disconnected!!!

@ Gary - One other thing mate. When you turn on the laptop and bios begin's make a note of it's 'make & version' then go on line & google for a 'backdoor password' for it!
(They some times have these backdoor passwords for technicians & they get released on to the net!)
