well i always use to go for amd for the price/perfomance ratio, but i got a dual core intel other month, and its great, and runs really cool (see other threads about that)
im in the process of changing all my pc;s over to intel, and there are some inte bargins to be had if you go for the older dual core rather than duo, there is also a few m/b's about with both agp/pci-e slots, so that would save abit without having to get new card an dif u have ddr400 it can be re-used
i would go for
intel p4 dual core/duo ( depends on budget)
asus/asrock m/b one that would take 65nm chips, so if u get dual u can upgrade when price drops
at least 1gig ddr 533 matched pair

@the target, im selling them m8
@jonc the main differances are the cost, die size and heat output
in day to day use and gaming most people cant tell the differance, but have look here at 2 processors

the main differance is the die size, down to 65nm in new duo core, so less power needed and so less heat, so less fan noise/size, all processors are going to the 65nm die, so a motherboard that allows that die will have a better upgrade route, but you could get a 90nm dual core chip and m/b for about 3rd of duo & m/b setup and not really see any differance, and then do the normal upgrade path of replacing the lot later
