as far as i know m8 you need a version 1.50 firmware to run homebrew
apps and backup games on it

if you have a 1.5.1 or 1.5.2 then you have to upgrade to 2.0.0 then from that downgrade again to 1.5.0 :tsk

here i copyied this guide to firmware for it from another forum it explanes abit
sortof lol
(AT YOUR OWN RISK)

First off.
You should have an active and working connection between your PC and PSP. Just connect it through USB and your PC should discover it.
Start with downgrading your 2.0 PSP, if you have 1.51 or 1.52 you need to first upgrade to 2.0 before the downgrade. The tutorial on how to do this is quite clear. There will be some strange errors which have no affect on the out come.

Instructions are from the Downgrade by MPH:

Installation :
--------------

- Create a UPDATE folder in PSP/GAME/ folder of your memory stick
- Copy EBOOT.PBP (update 1.50) in UPDATE folder
- Unpack MPHDowngrader.zip
- Copy overflow.tif in your PSP/PHOTO/ folder of your memory stick
- Copy h.bin in root of your memory stick
- Copy index.dat in root of your memory stick
- Plug the AC adaptor

Then, enter in VSHELL PHOTO MENU, this will launch Version Changer.

Create an USB connection and if the Version Changer has been installed, a new file is created in your root of your memory stick (ms0:/index.dat.bak).

Then go to VSHELL GAME MENU and launch 1.50 update.

Follow the instructions ...

After that is set you know have a good old 1.50 PSP allowing you to run unsigned code. That doesn't just mean pirated games, but emulators and other homebrew apps.

For running the umd ISO's. You'll need a loader like UMD Emulator.
hxxp://www.psp-hacks.com/downloads/UMD_Emulator_V0.8C.zip can get it from here.
U E have continued the Fastloader project.

The installation here is described in the readme first !! file, and is like this:

Copy all the files from this drawer onto your memstick to use this app, should look like
this after :

PSP/
|
+--- GAME/
| |
| +--- UMDEMULATOR/
| | |
| | +--- EBOOT.PBP
| |
| +--- UMDEMULATOR%/
| |
| +--- EBOOT.PBP
ISO/
| |
| +--- < place ISOs here >
|
UMDEMULATOR/
| |
| +--- core.bin
| +--- menu.bmp
| +--- config.dat <-- if this doesnt exist, it will be created by the app
| |
| /
| /
| |
| +--- UPDATEICON <-- optional, create for updater icon replacement
| |
| +--- EBOOT.BIN <-- started when updater icon selected (0146 error currently)
| +--- PARAM.SFO <-- updater param.sfo
|
F0/ <- optional, flash0: replacement drawer
|
F1/ <- optional, flash1: replacement drawer

Just copy these files as it says and youre a step closer to enjoy your backups

In the ISO directory of your PSP your should place your backuped UMD games. Just un-rar them like every other release today. Copy it, will take some time. When it's done just fire up the UMD Emulator from within Game/Memory Stick. With the UMD E program up and running you should see the content of the /ISO/ folder now. Press (X) to start the game.

Enjoy

depending what firmware your PSP is running, there are hacks for downgrading most firmware now, so that you can use back ups.
try this site and have a good read through,

_http://www.psp-hacks.com/psp-hacks.php

but becareful, if you don't follow the instructions correctly you will destroy your PSP

you can run a few homebrew on 2.00 to 2.80. so no need to downgrade. if you look on the internet you should be able to find it. I am happy on v3.01 with no homebrew :)
