View Full Version : hard disc not detected
After running scan disk in safe mode (thorough) with automatic fix on, my pc wont boot up at all. it says 'invalid system disc blah blah'. It also make a noise that I can only describe as a siren-its like when you leave the phone off the hook. If I boot from a cd and try to do a scan from there the hard disc cannot be found. Is it completely gone or has scan disc corrupted something that I can change?
I'm gonna try another hdd later to see whether the ATA or power supply is causing this (everything else is fine tho). Any other suggestions?
[not had much luck this year-already lost a laptop to a faulty mobo and just bought a flat screen for this pc that i've used for about 3 days!]

sounds like the post system is warning you of some kind of fault, most bios have these to tell u such info as memory not seated correct ect.
You might as well take out your harddrive and plug it all back in again to see if this helps,if not then i would boot the pc with a 98 floppy boot disk and do either a fdisk or chkdsk to see if the bios is seeing your harddrive.(also have a look at the maunual that come with the mother board and see if it exsplians what the error sound you are hearing is.

If the HDD is detected in the bios, boot from the XP CD and go into the 'Recovery console' when promted (press 'R'). When you get to the prompt, type 'fixmbr' and press return. This will re-write a new master boot record to the drive, it's fixed problems for me before now, although strange noises from a HDD is normally a bad sign !
:ok
went into the bios, it said primary ide master:none so I tried auto detect and it didn't find anything. selecting manual also didn't fix it. I still get same error when trying to boot. looked inside and its defo a grinding noise form the hdd. doesn't look good. gonna try and old hdd from an old pc to see if it detects this.
Yep it's dead. The hdd from my old pc works fine in there. I'll get a new one at the weekend. Is there any way of getting at the data on the other hdd?
Should I install Win98SE-this is the only disc i have. Or did i see XP on here once? if so could someone point it out to me?

if you pc don't detect the hard drive in the bios m8 you can't get the data from it you could try it with a USB caddy failing that theres nothing you can do
here is a link to win xp pro on demonoid
you will need an account with them and a torrent client
this passes windows genuine advantage :biggrin

might sound silly but you can put the hard drive in the freezer over night and then APPARNTLEY you get about 40 mins to retreive data from it,but people use to say i could do that with my bmx wheels years ago if they were buckled, think it could be a freexer fetish someone is spreading.
yeah
Remember that car stereos with codes could also be hacked like that lol! Might be worth it before putting in the bin tho. :ok
