mobile abroad

my girlfriend lives abroad at the moment and im just wondering what is the cheapest way for her to txt me and use yahoo messanger!!! she needs a new phone but cannot afford it at the moment so i want to purchase one for her....the requirements are camera phone and unlimited internet access so think i may need a contract phone also if i buy one here and ship it off to her will she have to pay a roaming fee...just do not have a clue about this so can anyone please help?

if you get a phone with built in wifi card (iphone, nokia X6 are 2 i know of) then she could use free wifi zones like in macdonalds etc or piggy back a neighbours connection. that would be the cheapest option.

if you get a phone contract here, then roaming charges will apply if you use it in another country, you would be better putting a local sim in.
