hi all,
i have had a ps3 hooked to my telly for a few months now,
and we use it primarily for tv using playtv,
but the ps3 is absolutely doing my head in now with the fan noise !,
it get deafening at times and its only running play tv, its not boxed in or blocked,
so,
i am thinking of a htpc, either buying one or building one,
anyone ever done this or know of a good system off the shelf,
primary use,
tv / recording,
web browsing and watching films,
quietness is a big thing so a fanless system would be good,
anyone help ?
cheers,

built one a few months back would say the whole thing cost about £400
but you could do better than that price
lack of space was a big problem so I found the smallest nice HTPC I could find
Silverstone case GD04 Here (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Silverstone-Grandia-GD04B-Black-HTPC-Desktop-Micro-ATX-w-o-PSU)
this comes with 3 120mm fans that I bought a PCI slot fan controller
to slow them down so they are silent from 5 feet away
and a corsair 450W modular PSU (not the most silent you can get but one of the
best brands and a 7 year warranty) Here (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/450W-Corsair-CMPSU-450HXUK-Modular-Sli-ATX-EPS12V-PS-2-20-24-pin-5-year-Warranty)
and AMD Athlon II x2 245 CPU @2.9ghz this is one of the coolest CPU's about and its only £60
Here (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AMD-Athlon-II-X2-245e-Energy-Efficient-Dual-Core-S-AM3-29GHz-2MB-Cache-45W-Retail)
Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H Motherboard erm because its nice lol
good on board graphics and sound Here (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Gigabyte-GA-MA785GMT-UD2H-AMD-785G-AM3-DDR3-1066-1333-1800-SATA-3Gb-s-RAID-Micro-ATX-VGA)
G.Skill Ripjaw 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666C8 1333MHz memory Here (http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Components/Memory-PCAndLaptop/DDR3-PC3-10666/1333MHz/G.Skill/F3-10666CL8D-4GBRM.html)
and the CPU cooler is a fanless Silverstone NT01-E that I wasnt really happy with
BUT when I stuck a old amd fan with a voltage limiting cable to slow it right down on the
heatsink the cpu never goes over 38C and is totally silent still
the system is very cool and is almost silent from 5 foot away you can't hear it at all
only thing I would change if I done it again would be the case for the latest version
