Hi,
I'm considering installing Windows 7 but I'm worried that i might lose all my copying / ripping progs that I currently use on XP.
Has anyone tried DVD shrink, Decryter etc and got them working OK on Windows 7 ?
thanks

to be honest am yet to find a program that wont work on win 7
i just downloaded dvd shrink and it works as far as installing it and opening it
i haven't tried to rip a DVD cos am too lazy to go downstairs to get one
but am sure it would
you can also run programs in vista and xp compatibility modes....
i have a program called pocketdivx encoder (used for my archos) it was acting funny under win 7 changed the compatibility mode to xp and it works fine
i would say if it works under vista it will work right off in win7
if not change the mode and it should work
only problem i have had was drivers for my soundblaster really and that got sorted

I have XP and win7 on mine and I never boot with xp
why don't you dual boot so you have both ?
install xp one 1 partition or drive first
then install windows 7 on another drive or partition win 7 will do the rest
when you boot you will be asked what os you want to use :ok

you can also run programs in vista and xp compatibility modes
make sure you install at least the professional version for this feature, its not available in home premium :ok

am 85% sure the mode that is only available for pro and above is for running
windows xp from within windows 7 as a virtual pc
so you run XP from within windows 7 for them programs that just wont work on 7
but your CPU must support this.
the setting I am talking about is something that I have seen on windows xp for
windows 98 am 2000 but it seems a lot more effective on windows 7 with a lot more options
but as I am using the ultimate version of 7 I couldn't say 100% if these options would be there on a less than pro-version
here is a screen grab on the compatibility option you get when you right click a EXE file under 7

that makes sense. so if you install home and want xp compatability mode then use VirtualBox. i use it to play about with linux and as a testbed for "suspect" programs. its made by Sun and its free :ok

its as good as VMware

honestly i have found no reason to use the virtual xp mode at all everything works for me right off
am really liking windows 7 its faster on boot
and defo faster at transferring files between drives
have no problems with games photoshop or anything
last night I plugged in my xbox 360 pad never tried it before.
soon as I plugged it in it downloaded a 2MB set up file and installed itself in seconds
opened up wolfenstein was asked do I want to use the pad and it worked
spot on :biggrin

your not playing fps using a pad are you????
you may as well use your xbox cos thats just a waste of a perfectly good keyboard and mouse not to mention far superior aiming.
pads on a PC are for ProEvo and driving games only :biggrin

No probs here accept a couple of touchscreen applications which i`m sure you wouldnt use anyway, like that whats been said before dual boot and i`m pretty sure after a few days you will just work in windows 7 (by the way windows 8 is out 2011).
Also programs that dont work there are plenty of alternative`s that do etc.

its giving me issue's already, its saying corruption error run chkdsk, then its stuck in a checkdisk loop of repairing stuff and rebooting then repairing the same stuff then rebooting. may format and re-install again.
also it wont let me save (browser downloads) to any drive other than C:
it just flashes some message then goes back to my docs, im sure this is down to UAC but im on the lowest setting and it still does it.?

can't say I had any of them problems myself
just tried to save a browser download to another drive using IE and it worked fine...I also have UAC turned down in user accounts

format and reinstall, UAC disabled and it seems to be playing nice now.
i will give it a good testing later on when i get up when i try some games and compare frame rates to XP64Bit
also i only installed 32bit Ultimate, for the sake of compatability issue's with the 64bit drivers :ok
defo using the RTM version Dave

do us a favour run that DPC latency checker on your win 7 install
I have just found I have bad dpc spikes that i dont get under xp it had to be drivers or something that kicking if soon as you open a program
when i first boot its fine open some up and the problems start

no problems as of yet, seems quite stable and now i have disabled UAC, no anoying messages.
had a bit of an issue with the default floder display in explorer, i dunno were it was starting but i wanted it to start at "My Computer", and the fact that the quick launch bar was missing. but there both sorted now.
anyone wanna post their System Rating scores?
