Seen as a few of us have now got a Hero, thought a list of useful/interesting apps may be handy ..............

These are a few things I've installed and kept!

Tools, etc
------------
Taskiller free - Shows all running apps and lets you kill those which youre not using to free memory (must have)
ConvertDroid - Mega converter (covers just about everything!)
Task List - Simple task list util
Bubble - Spirit level app
aFlashlight - Simple torch thing
3G Watchdog - Monitors your mobile 'net usage
Barcode Scanner - Reads bar codes (Impresses people! :biggrin ). You can also use this when on the market website. Simply scan the little box at the top left of an apps page on the PC Monitor and it'll take you straight to the download page on your 'phone)
Shop Savvy - Reads a products barcode and then checks out all local retailers and the web for the best price.

Mapping Apps
------------------
GPS Status - Mega detailed GPS positioner, shows longitude, latitude, etc.
Google Maps - Same as the website.
Google Sky Map - Shows the star map above you!
Compass - Nice little compass app.
Map Weasel - Identifies traffic problems
Places Directory - Find local stuff based on your GPS position (garages, cinemas, cafe's, etc.)

Entertainment
------------------
eBuddy IM - Instant messenger app (MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, etc)
Beeb Player - BBC iPlayer (works best over WAN connection)
Shazam - Will identify a music track playing on the radio/in a shop, etc.
Movies by Flixster - Cinema app. Lets you view trailers/reviews, etc and then searches local cinemas for listings based on your GPS position.

Games
--------
Gem Buster - Bejeweled type game
Chain Explosion - 5 minute distraction!
Speed Forge - Wipeout type affair (Worth installing the demo to see the graphics)
Robo Defense - Tower defense type game (addictive!)
Labyrinth Lite - Marble maze game
Slide Puzzle - Sliding tile game, lets you choose your own image to use
Scrambled Net - Neat little puzzle game

If you come across anything useful or neat, post it below :ok

A useful tip. I don't know why, but these 'phones don't allow the use of MP3's as a ringtone or message alert 'out of the box'. However, it's a doddle to do, just follow the instructions below:

-Connect the Hero to your computer via the USB cable
-Open the Notifications screen on your Hero (pull down a finger from the top of the screen to the bottom) and select the USB Storage notification
-Choose "Mount"
-Browse to the SD Card on your PC
-Look for a folder called media, if it's not there, create it by right clicking and choosing New Folder, then rename the folder to be media
-Inside the media folder, you need a folder called audio, again, if it's not there create it as above
-Inside the audio folder, you can create a subfolder for the sound category you want to change-
ringtones - for sound files you want to use as ringtones
alarms - for sound files you want to use for any alarms
notifications - for incoming notifications such as SMS alerts, emails, etc
-Copy your sound file in to the relevant folder

You should now see your sound file listed in the menu for selection in the relevant sound settings menu (to access the ringtone/notification settings, press the hard Menu key from one of your home screens, then press Settings then Sounds and Display)

This a great online version of the 'Market'. If you find an app that you want to install, use the barcode scanner on the 'phone to read the square at the top left of the page and it'll take you straight to the apps download page on the 'phone.

Setting a song as ringtone
You can use songs as your phone ringtone.
1. In the Library, select the song that you want to use as ringtone and then play
it back.
2. In the Playback screen, press MENU and then tap Set as ringtone.
3. In the Set as ringtone options menu, tap Phone ringtone or Contact
ringtone.
Note If you select Contact ringtone, you need to select the contacts you want to
associate the song with in the next screen.
